Smile Design with Porcelain Veneers

The porcelain veneers are the most exclusive dental aesthetic treatment in aesthetic dentistry. They are usually performed in two or three visits, as measurements must be taken and prepared in the laboratory, to then be cemented in the clinic by a specialized professional.

Since they are made with porcelain, their duration is longer and they do not become pigmented when consuming foods such as red wine, coffee, or when consuming tobacco. Similarly, proper care must be taken, and it is always advisable to attend a maintenance or review appointment annually.

Steps to perform a smile design with porcelain veneers

Diagnosis and planning of porcelain veneer treatment

To perform a smile design with porcelain veneers, in the first visit, after evaluating the available and feasible options according to your current condition, once the patient chooses this treatment, the taking of impressions is carried out. Subsequently, they will be sent to the laboratory, where a waxing will be performed with the changes we want to make in the mouth, which will then serve for the mock-up. This waxing can be digital or physical, and would be printed in 3D, which would be what the patient tries on in the mouth.

Preparation of the porcelain veneer

In the second visit, the so-called mock-up test is performed, which is nothing more than a projection in the patient’s mouth of what their future porcelain veneers will be. Once the shape, function and harmony have been evaluated, the design must be approved by the dentist and by the patient, for the subsequent elaboration of the veneers in the laboratory.

At the end of this step, the surface of the tooth is prepared by remodeling the surface of the tooth to a thickness almost equivalent to that of the sheet that will be placed on the natural tooth. Then the final impression is taken, which will be sent to the laboratory for the final elaboration of the veneers. At this time, and depending on the carving that has been done on the tooth, the patient can go home with or without provisionals.

Cementation

Approximately two or three weeks after the previous consultation, the patient comes to the consultation for the final placement of the porcelain veneers. During the first part of the appointment, the dentist reviews the adapted fit and color of each veneer. Prior to cementation, a test is performed where the patient approves the new shape, size and color of their teeth, this being an essential step for the final cementation of the veneers.

Once the previous step has been completed, the tooth and the veneer are conditioned for definitive cementation, with a special cement that will allow it to adhere correctly and permanently to the natural tooth.

The final step consists of removing excess cement, checking the bite, and making the necessary adjustments. It is advisable to go to consultation two weeks later to check the condition of the gums and the placement of the veneers. In this appointment, new impressions are taken for the elaboration of a veneer protection splint, which is advisable to be used by the patient every night to avoid a fissure of the veneers due to involuntary movements.
